Sweet Almond Vs Bitter Almond Oil

Between sweet almond oil and bitter almond oil, there is a distinction. Two separate types of the almond plant produce sweet and bitter almond oil. Prunus dulcis var. Amara is the species of almond from which bitter almond is produced. This type of almond, which is deadly if consumed, is frequently utilized in essential oils and baking extracts.

It's okay to consume sweet almond oil (Prunus Amygdalus var. Dulcis). This naturally derived oil, which is known for its medicinal properties and is naturally powerful in vitamins E and A, packs a punch of fatty acids including omega-6 and 9, which are beneficial for both internal and exterior health.

As a fixed oil and a carrier oil, sweet almond won't evaporate. An essential oil that is flammable and does evaporate is bitter almond oil. Because of its smell, bitter almond oil is frequently used in cosmetics. Since it is a superb lubricant and works well on dry, sensitive skin, sweet almond oil is better suited for more practical uses.

Sweet Almond Oil Substitutes

Grapeseed- Similar to almond oil, Grapeseed oil is a very versatile oil, with a unique fatty acid composition that makes it easy to use for a variety of skin, hair and health care projects.

Apricot Kernel Oil- Apricot kernel oil is a light oil, it is not as light as almond oil and barely recommended for hair care, like sweet almond oil, but it is considered a better opponent to sweet almond oil when used as a massage oil.

Sunflower Oil - Sunflower oil and almond oil can be switched based on the different properties that you are looking for in each oil. Sunflower oil is richer in vitamin E and has more polyunsaturated fats than Sweet almond oil, but Sweet almond oil is more widely available and less expensive. It also has fewer saturated fats.

Peanut Oil - Because peanut oil has a moderate nutty flavor, almond oil can be readily substituted. However, both of these oils should be avoided by anyone with nut allergies. Contrary to almond oil, which is best utilized under low heat, peanut oil has a high smoke point, making it ideal for deep frying.

Jojoba Oil- Sweet almond oil is a common substitute used for jojoba oil. While Jojoba oil is effective for quick treatments, almond oil is used for reparative solutions. They both absorb well into the skin and hair and however Jojoba oil is best suited for hair than sweet almond oil.

Side Effects and Allergies

People with nut allergies should try to avoid using sweet almond oil. Those with acne-prone skin should avoid applying almond oil directly to the face, as it may block pores and cause pimples and breakouts. Due to the fact that not enough research is done on the oil, it will always be safer for you to do a patch test before using the oil, just to see how you react to the oil and if it is safe to use.

Environmental factors and Sustainability

Despite all the lovely benefits sweet almond oil has for your skin, hair and overall healthcare. The downside of sweet almond oil is that it is relatively unsustainable and has a significant environmental impact that is not so appealing.

Since it requires approximately 16 095 liters of water to create 1 kg of shelled or peeled almonds, almond oil has a large water footprint. A kilogram of organic, dry almonds requires 3.56 kg of CO2e to manufacture, hence it also has a significant carbon footprint.

Almond oil is vegan because it comes from tree nuts, not from any animal products or byproducts, but almond manufacturing uses a lot of pollinators, which is bad for populations of bees, butterflies, and other pollinators.

Bees must be shipped cross-country in the US in order to pollinate almond trees in California. Many bees are frequently killed throughout the operation, either as a result of the lengthy travel itself or because diseases are introduced while pollinating the trees. The illness is carried back to the hive, where it can kill the entire colony.

As users of these products, it is our duty to ensure that, if we decide to use non-ecofriendly products, we do our part by using our beloved products sparingly so that there is not an excessive demand for it. In this way, we can still enjoy all the benefits and help save the planet as much as we can. In order to avoid plastic bottle waste and only purchase, when necessary, I would advise purchasing an economy size bottle and keeping a little dropper bottle on hand for regular use. Let's just be mindful and responsible in how we use and consume things since it is the simple things that truly count. The planet is still our home, so we must care for it as it does for us.

That's it folks, let us know down in the comment section what your experience with sweet almond oil has been and if you are yet to use it let us know why you would want to try it? see you in the next blog.

Until next time,

Pretty Simple Beauty.
